Wood Duck Project Updates
Working to Increase North Carolina's Wood Duck Population

The North Carolina Wood Duck Production Project is currently working to finish up the Lake Mattamuskeet Nest Box Project. Scheduled for completion by the end of April, a total of 200 nesting units will cover more than five miles on the north side of the lake. NCWA is providing 100% of the funding for this project, which will also include the monitoring and cleaning of all 200 units upon completion of the 2003 nesting season. Annual production of Wood Ducks from these nest boxes is expected to reach 1000 ducklings.

The Wood Duck Production Project is also in the process of working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation in an effort to initiate nest box projects on NCDOT supported properties. The initial project will be located in the Washington, NC area and will be maintained by NCWA. The Wood Duck Production Project is currently working with private landowners throughout the state to provide nesting units to enhance wood duck production.

NCWA was also responsible for the donation of 100 nesting boxes and predator guards to the Butner Wildlife Refuge located in Butner, NC. The Wood Duck Production Project is committed to providing the wood duck with quality nesting structures to ensure the success of future production.

Thank You Volunteers!!

Were you aware that the Wood Duck Production Project has a volunteer program? Cooperators of the WDPP who wish to check and maintain their own boxes are sent a volunteer packet by SCWA. Inside the packet is all the information and tools needed to complete the checks, as well as interesting information on wood ducks and other cavity nesting species. After completion of the nesting season, volunteers mail back a copy of their findings to SCWA headquarters for record keeping, and results are published in Waterfowl and Wetlands. Thanks go out to the volunteers who returned data forms:
